“Family is not an important thing. It’s everything.”

— Michael J. Fox

“There’s three things in business: quality, service, and price – and you can pick two of the three things.”

— BJ Rycus, Quoting His Grandfather, Lionel Rycus

If you’re looking for tips on how to balance a passion for family, work, and sports, ask BJ Rycus of Rycus Flooring. BJ has found a way to enjoy work everyday and also maintain his passion for things like sports, exercise, and traveling.

Rycus Flooring is a 25 year old family owned and operated flooring business. They’re particularly well known for ceramic tile, but they carry and install just about any flooring and backsplash material you can imagine.

Rycus Flooring has seen its ups and downs. After a fire destroyed their store on Thanksgiving morning in 1997, they reopened the following Monday in Ron and Lynn Rycus’ basement (BJ’s parents), where they remained for several months. They’ve certainly bounced back, though! After focusing primarily on residential flooring, they’ve now employed someone to focus solely on growing commercial business, and are growing tremendously as a result.

BJ and I talked a lot about when to hire someone for a specific task versus distributing that task across multiple people. This is difficult for any business to decide, but particularly so for family businesses, where many of us wear 15 different hats.

The dude is a huge sports fan (especially when it comes to Michigan State University), and enjoys traveling around the country with his brother every summer to visit various college campuses.

Overall, we had a great conversation, and I took away some great hidden gems to provide for you below, including our discussion on domain names after I stopped recording. Click the link below to hear the full interview!

Other Tips

Domain Names

We talked about this after I had already stopped recording, but here’s a tip for those of you who have a company/family name that is difficult to spell; I’ve implemented this strategy at my family’s company, Friedland Industries, Inc.

Buy similarly spelled domain names from your current web host or a company like Liquid Web, Blue Host, or Directnic, and redirect those domain names to your real website. This way, even if people misspell your domain name, they’ll still arrive at your website.

For example, our website is FriedlandIndustries.com, but I’ve also bought FreedlandIndustries.com and FreidlandIndustries.com, and have them redirecting to FriedlandIndustries.com. Of course, if people find you through a Google search, Google will autocorrect the spelling. However, I always like to have a back-up plan, just in case.

Slogans

During the interview, BJ mentioned that Rycus Flooring received a lot of positive feedback after implementing the slogan, At Rycus, You’ll Like Us! There’s actually quite a few articles that suggest using a rhyme in your slogan can help people remember you!
